4th of July, America's Independence Day, Are YOU really free?

Do you know the history of the 4th of July in America?

Here is a link that talks about the history of the day we declared our Independence from England, dissolved our political connection the State of Great Britain and absolved all allegiance to the British Crown.

This is a definition of Independence:

Independence is a condition of a nation, country, or state in which its residents and population, or some portion thereof, exercise self-government, and usually sovereignty, over the territory. The opposite of independence is a dependent territory. Independence does not necessarily mean freedom.

This is a part of the definition of Freedom:

The state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.

What is true freedom in Christ?

This is a really great link that talks about what freedom looks like from a biblical perspective.

During this day of celebration of independence for our country do we think about our personal freedom, what makes you free?

A lot of us, me included, are slaves to things of this world.  Money, electronics, family, entertainment, ministry, my own thoughts and feelings, etc.... this list could be never ending in our world of freedom and independence.

Have you ever looked up the definition of slave? There is the obvious one most of us think about:  a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.

BUT, the one I am referring to is this one: a person who is excessively dependent upon or controlled by something.   Yowsa!  That's a doozy!

Here is a rather lengthy bible study on the topic, but the context is this:  Do not be a slave to sin, rather be a slave to righteousness through the Holy Spirit.

We are all walking our own paths, have you taken a wrong turn?  It's never too late to turn back, it might seem a little scary at first but true freedom in Christ can overcome the world.
